Ilan has narrowly escaped her last encounter with the soldiers of the evil Praetor but many of her outlaw friends have not been so fortunate. When her closest companion is dragged off to Selbius for execution, Ilan has no choice but to defy the captain of the forest brigands and journey to the stronghold of her enemies.
Risking exposure, both as an outlaw and a possessor of illegal magic, Ilan has few allies in the strange city. Worse, she has attracted the attention of an unknown mage bent on her destruction. With the help of an unpredictable warrior priest, a cunning street thief, and her powerful bow, will Ilan evade the clutches of the Prateor and the attacks of the mysterious mage long enough to complete her mission and rescue her friend?
Betrayal of Thieves Legends of Dimmingwood Volume 2 (Audible Audio Edition) C Greenwood Ashley Arnold Books
Overall an entertaining read which takes you into a interesting land, the story of how the main character, Ilan, as she allies with people in the quest to free a friend. Some characters are more developed than others, and not sure if we will get to know them more in the remaining two books or not. After reading this one, I did go order the first book into he series to close some questions I had on why things were happening (hey worked for Star Wars right?). Overall a good read which had some surprises and left opening for the follow on in the series as the trials and tribulations continue. My son enjoyed it and has actually started reading the third book so will take a look when he is done. An enjoyable read which was not hard to follow what was going on.I routinely provide feedback on products I try so that other shoppers and friends may avoid some of the not so good choices on products they are looking for while avoiding the bad products. I have found this to be an effective and quality product which is nice and performed as promised by the seller. Please, if you find this review to be helpful to you be sure to hit YES. Betrayal of Thieves Legends of Dimmingwood Volume 2 (Audible Audio Edition) C Greenwood Ashley Arnold Books Reviews
Ilan is trying to find her way. Orphaned, possessing illegal magic, with her best friend killed, and another friend captured, having lost the only link to her family (an amulet), but having found a mysterious bow, she travels to the big city, hoping to rescue her friend and recover the amulet. She relies on two new acquaintances, a thief and a mage-priest. Her friend turns out not needing rescue (or does he?) and has joined the household of the ruler that doomed her parents to death. What the heck is going on here? Perhaps some of the answers will be uncoveed in book 3. Note the lovely covers seem to portray an elf with a magic bow, but Ilan is human, and the bow has been a mystery so far - - she hasn't used it yet, except to wallop an enemy or two.
I didn't read the author closely enough. I thought it was Ed Greenwood. It's not. The first book wasn't bad. The book is really slow. Near the end it starts to pick up with some excitement and then the book ends. So I bought the second book. The second book drops you back down into 1st gear and sets a grandma cruising speed for the rest of the book. I didn't finish book 2.
I give this book 1 star because there is no option for zero stars. This was a total waste of time and money. The first book of this series "Magic of Thieves" was a good book, but this 2nd book of the series had me wondering if the author fell asleep while writing it, I know I did while reading it! I received the first book for free and enjoyed it, then eagerly paid for the 2nd. There was little life, excitement, or adventure in this 2nd book. There is a 3rd installment of this series, but I am not willing to spend any money for it. Although I did enjoy the first book, I did not like the main character ,Ilan. I liked her even less in the 2nd book.
I liked the writing, but this series is a group of books that are less than 200 pages long each. I've always thought that to be somewhat of a rip-off when the series is more than three, even if the first book is free. The books don't have complete story arcs, at least not to my perception which means the author has split a longer work into smaller to get more royalties. I liked the setup and would have read on, except for the reasons above.
The first book was fascinating and the storyline a delight to read. The second book (this one) was also well written. The problem I had with the second book was it's length. It is very short. Almost a short story with no concrete ending as it is continued in the 3rd. For this reason I will not purchase the 3rd book in this series. I assume it is similar to the 2nd in that it is short and without ending.
Disappointing in the writing. Character failed to give a good account of her self. First she is selfish and opinionated and never learns the lessons of life. When she gets to show concern it is very fast to return to her selfish ways. A shallow character. She did not have a childhood as she was with adults and fighters [criminals] when growing up in a hard life all the time. No tantrums accepted in this life of crime. She ends up very childish for the life she has had. Still she doesn't learn. Would have expected a more mature manner.
I tried the second book to see if it would grab hold and take me on an interesting story. Every opportunity was lost. Found the book wanting in many directions. Main one, was the book was really just a chapter of the first book not a strong story to be carried on. And yet there is the ingredient to produce a great story. It hasn't delivered. Unfortunately I am lost as a reader, as I want more story not drivel.
Needs work.
Pros First off, I love the story so far. The characters have a lot of potential just waiting to be developed. The plot is coming along nicely with many questions waiting to be answered about Ilan, Terrac, the bow, Hadrian, and others. The writing style is fairly easy to follow and doesn't ramble too much. The storyline itself is very entertaining.
Cons Unfortunately, there are way more cons than pros at this point. First off, this does not feel like a book, but more like parts of a book. I think the author would have done better by combining books 1, 2, & 3 together into a single volumn. Any book less than 200 pages is not much of a book. I really felt like someone took a book and broke it into multiple parts just to sell to make more money.
With that being said, the story itself in this book lagged and didn't not accomplish much. At the end of book 1, Ilan find a new magic bow, and decides to run away for training. There is almost nothing in this book about the bow, and no training at all. Hopefully book 3 will contain thes parts. So far all we have accomplished is to meet a few new characters but the story is slowly limping along at this point.
I would love to give more stars but can't at this point.
